Ivan Cleary reveals how close he came to quitting as Penrith Panthers coach | Daily Telegraph

Penrith Panthers halfback Nathan Cleary has shared an emotional response after his father, Ivan Cleary, announced his retirement from coaching at the end of the 2024 NRL season. The momentous news sent shockwaves through the rugby league community, marking the end of an era for the Panthers, who have dominated the NRL under Ivan’s leadership.

Nathan, who has been an integral part of the Panthers’ success over the past few years, admitted he was overwhelmed with mixed emotions as he processed his father’s decision. “It’s a surreal feeling,” Nathan said in a press conference following the announcement. “On one hand, I’m proud of everything Dad has achieved with the club. On the other, it’s hard to imagine him not being around every day. He’s been my mentor, my coach, and my biggest supporter.”

Nathan acknowledged the profound impact Ivan has had on both his career and the Panthers’ rise to dominance in the NRL. Under Ivan’s stewardship, Penrith has won three premierships in the past four seasons and built a reputation for being one of the most disciplined and well-coached teams in the competition.

“When Dad took over as coach, I was just a young player trying to make my way,” Nathan recalled. “He believed in me and pushed me to be the best I could be, not just as a player, but as a person.”

Looking ahead, Nathan expressed confidence in Penrith’s future. With Ivan set to retire at the conclusion of the 2024 season, Nathan will take over as head coach in 2025, continuing his father’s legacy. “I’ll do my best to carry on what Dad has started and make sure the Panthers stay at the top,” Nathan said. “It’s a big responsibility, but I’m ready for it.”

The announcement of Nathan’s eventual appointment as head coach is seen as a natural progression for the club, which remains in safe hands as the Cleary legacy continues.
